So I was in the pub the other night and a friend said to me “did you hear the FIA have decided to double the points for the final F1 GP of the season”.
I suggested he put his drink down and go home as he’s had way too many for a cold Tuesday night in January.
Yes, I have heard this before but am surprised the decision hasn’t received all that much attention as of yet. Now I read Bernie Ecclestone is writing to all teams to get this extended to the last 3 GPs of the season!!!!
It was highlighted on BBC Five Live’s excellent “Fighting Talk ” Programme that in-line with these rules perhaps we could tamper with other sports? In Football if it’s 0-0 with 15 minutes to go perhaps the ref can decide to award 5 points for a win. This would hopefully motivate my team, West Ham, to do more than simply park the bus vs. Chelsea in mid-week.
Perhaps in the disgraceful Ashes Tests we all had to endure, with England 4-0 down, the last test at Sydney could be worth 4 tests giving us the chance to level the series. Maybe we should just let the Aussies have one innings to our two.
I’m all for change and progress but really ” double points” why not “treble” them? Yes we want to make the sport more competitive but this makes no sense and again messes with the history and tradition of the sport. When people look back 20 or so years from now and see the 2014 winner it won’t say how he won it. There could be a 50 point swing with the leading driver crashing out and someone from the chasing pack emerging victorious.
What about these suggestions as an alternative:
Why can’t the teams be allowed a substitute card where once a season they are allowed to hold it up and pick out any driver and remove him from the race. I would imagine a certain Mr Vettel’s car would be a popular choice.
Or , as my old Sunday League club used to do, on the last game of the season we would all switch from our normal positions. In this case the leaders start at the back with Max Chilton and co starting from pole. This would certainly provide some excitement as it did when I had to play in goal.
I’m all for change but not sure this is the right idea? let me know any suggestions you have.
